The book begins with Steven's mom telling him to 'Run down to the store for me, will you, Steven, and buy six eggs, five bananas, four apples, three oranges for the baby, two doughnuts, and a bag of chips for your snack.' On his way to the store, he fights a bullying bear, a monkey, as well as a kangeroo. He ends up getting what his mom needs and returns home but he has a lighter load but he ends up making her happy.

  • The renowned John Burningham is in classic form with a simple story of a boy, a girl, and some animal friends that invites the child listener to join in. One day, Boy and Girl head down the hill with a picnic basket and meet a fancily dressed Sheep, Pig, and Duck.

John Burningham's classic and wonderfully deadpan picture book takes readers on a perilous trip to the store, as an intrepid boy outwits a threatening bear, a menacing monkey, and a cranky kangaroo - all of whom want something from his shopping basket. This handout is designed to support the story - The Shopping Basket. Children will write in the speech bubbles what the animals said to Steven in the story. It can be jumbled up and children are asked to put the events in order using time connectives.
